2012 NewFO challenge-February addition

NewFO2012

Today is the day that we are suppose to be showing off the NewFo’s that we started in the past month for the NewFo Challenge over at CatPatches. However, I didn’t get as far as I would have hoped in either of my project. However, I guess that is okay since this is not a challenge to get projects done, but just to start something new every month.

My big NewFo was going to be my Valentines heart Quilt, but I finished it....LOL

One of my new projects is a pumpkin wall hanging. All I have done with that is cut some of the fabric. It has a lot of appliqué and since I have never done it before I have been too afraid to start. So this is as far as I have gotten.

The other NewFo is a baby quilt. I was all gung ho to get this one finished this month until I decided not to make it for the person that I was going to give it to. I bought a kit so all I have done it cut my strips in half and pair them with the other strips in colour combo’s I like. They will eventually be sewed together in pairs, cut, and then become 4patch blocks or something of the sort.

I do have one more NewFo' my mini quilt for the name game swap. However, since it now has the name of the person who is getting it on it.....I can't really show it. Since I am also unhappy with it I don't think I will be showing it either....Lol We'll see sometime after you leave it for a bit you come back and wonder how you could have ever hated it...I hope that is the case!

So there you go a couple of starts, but not as much progress as I would have liked. Make sure you go over to Cat Patches to see what everyone else has started this month

Food for Thought

There isn’t a lot going on over here lately. I am trying to get all my tax info ready to submit so that puts everything on hold. All year I am so careful about keeping good records of everything and filing it away and then come tax time I can never seem to find a darn thing...Not sure how it always works out that way. I am hoping that it’s not that I have misplaced things as much as it is they just haven’t come in the mail yet...we shall see. In the mean time the craft room and kitchen look like a tornado has gone through as I search for missing papers.

After reading a few blogs in the past couple of months during Thursdays Kitchen cupboard that talk about how much they pay per meal. I have been thinking that our at home meals might not be very cost effective. However, I have been too lazy to sit down and actually figure out how much each meal costs. Yesterday while at what seems to be our weekly trip to do grocery shopping at Costco I figured maybe buying in baulk is not the right fit for us. We are trying to cut back on our grocery spending so I was critical of what we bought. We tried to keep it down to only what we need and no splurge too many on things we don’t need, but simply want to try..lol We walked out only spending 142 which is much better than the 342 we usually spend.

I started comparing prices this morning  and now I am not sure if we got any good deals especially after looking at some online flyers, but I think on a whole Costco does have better pricing than the grocery stores.

If I keep on comparing prices I am never going to get this post finished so I will just put down the 2 good deals that I think we got on meat.

Pork loin was on sale at 5 dollars off so we spent $10 for 3.31kg of meat. I was able to cut this down to 23 chops which is about .40 a chop. At the grocery store it is 8.80/kg for the same thing so that was a good savings. That works out to 9 meals for $10

We also bought beef tenderloin. We are just about out of beef from the farm and for some reason they don’t want to butcher another one...so that means we have to buy beef. The tenderloin was $62 for 2.92kg which is a bit pricey at 21.39 bucks per kg. However I was able to get 18 good size steaks which means it’s about $3 per steak.  9 meals for $62 Now that seems a bit pricey, but  it works out to 6.88 per package which is a good deal for beef tenderloin steaks to me atleast!

Okay off to look for papers and make lunch!

Sewing Saturday

I didn’t get much done to show for sewing Saturday. Last night Mr. Pickles interfered with my sewing first we were going to watch a movie, but then he didn’t want to watch one right at 8, and then he wanted to play a game, but found something truck related online that he had to read and all of a sudden it was 11 and I hadn’t barely gotten anything done!

I did however get my block done for the International Stashes Bee. Katy is working on a Quilters Palette quilt and asked us to all make one block in which ever colour we wanted. Since I had a few pink FQ and had bought some extra pink for Danielle’s block in the We Bee Learning bee I figured pink was going to be my lucky colour. This is what I came up with

I like it even though I only had 5 pink fabrics to work with. That is the bad part about being a newbie quilter and taking part in a bee where you use your own stash. I don’t have much of a stash to use! I like the fact that if I don’t have a certain colour I can just go out and buy it, but buying say 7 different fabrics to make one square is a bit out of my budget...or at least I am trying to tell myself that..lol

****update this spot has been filled***
In other news I am looking for a replacement member for group 2 of the We Bee Learning Bee.  Your month to host would be October and we would need you to play catch up and do the January and February blocks. If you are interested check out our flickr group http://www.flickr.com/groups/webeelearning/ and fm or e-mail me if you are interested.
I hope everyone is having a great week-end

Friday's thoughts

Today I need to catch up on some house work. The good thing about being in all these bees/swaps is that I have done a lot of sewing and quilting in the past 2 months. The bad thing is that my house work is getting neglected....and the problem is that I don't care...HAHA

Well I do all the important stuff like washing dishes, clothes and the toilet are done. But the things like dusting and putting the laundry away keep getting pushed back. So today is going to be a cleaning day. We were supposed to be going on a little road trip today, but I don't think that is going to be happening anymore and the sewing can wait until tonight. I want to get my February block for the wonky bee done and finally finish my mini for the name game swap. I have lost all will to finish it up since it is stressing me out to much. Nonetheless it will get done and mailed before the end of the month!

Yesterday I got my package for the Valentine's Swap I took part in over and And Sew We Craft.
Laura from over at fleur-de-lou sent me this lovely table runner. I took pictures not thinking that I should iron it first so I apologize for the crapppy pics. Thank you Laura it’s very lovely and I will cherish it for years to come.

Thursdays Kitchen Cupboard 23/02/2012

This week my kitchen actually was well used. We were only in the city once and the rest of the time we ate at home. I even tried a couple of new dishes that turned out to be pretty tasty. I apologize for the pictures I always forget to take one until we are just about done the meal...so these are "pot"pictures of the meals with out the carbs or the sides...lol

Friday we had Italian sausage and peppers. I know there are a lot of recipes out there for this, but I didn’t think of that until after I made it. For just throwing things together that I thought might taste good it turned out pretty darn good. I used onions, broccoli and canned tomato sauce all from the garden.

Saturday we went to the city and just had some yummy pizza.....it was nothing special, but we had not eaten lunch yet so when the pizza arrived at 7pm it was amazing..LOL

Sunday center loin Pork chops in a Mornay sauce with pasta and asparagus. This was my first time ever making mornay sauce and I LOVE IT. I don't know why I have never made it before!

Monday was a simple meal of Ham Steak, Fries and corn

Tuesday we had racelette..... This is a rather stinky French melting cheese. You just cut off a few chunks and melt them on plates in the oven. When the cheese is melted you eat it along with baked potatoes and a side of pickles. We usually start the meal off with a simple broth soup.

Wednesday Chicken Stir fry

This whole next week we will only be in the city 2 times so it should be another yummy week in the kitchen! I need to start using up some of my harvest that I froze/canned before its time to start harvesting again so this week I am going to try and use as much home grown food as I can!

Today's Kitchen Cupboard linky party is being hosted by Jody from Spring Garden Acre. Go on over and check out what's going on in everyone's kitchens!

Take care

Thankful

Yesterday we did end up spending a good chunk of family day with family...well with my in-laws, but I guess that counts. We ended up going to see my nephew’s new place of sorts He is a teenager, engaged and while his fiancée is finishing grade 12 he is living in the house that she and her parents bought. It was a scary place that I felt so bad that he had to live in. I think he spends most of his time still living at home since he is scared to stay there. It wasn’t fit for a dog to live in...But I am not the parents of either child so all I could say is oh yeah this is nice.

It makes me feel truly blessed to have the most amazing parents that brought me up well and always wanted nothing but the best for me, To have a husband, then boyfriend that had high standards of where he wanted to live and raise a family and to have been lucky enough to have bought a lovely little piece of heaven before the market sky rocketed! Now we are by no means living in a 5 star house of luxury in fact we are a far cry from that...but compared to that house.... oh my.

So today I am just feeling very thankful!!

I also wanted to give a quick thank you to Marlene over at Stichin by the Lake for sending me this lovely pattern I won in her giveaway.  I have added it to my list of things to get done or at least started in the Christmas qal 2012 day in March! Thank you Marlene!

Happy Family Day

Today is family day here in Saskatchewan. There is no real importance to today’s date the government just decided to give us an extra Stat Holiday a few years back and that is what they chose to call it.  We don’t have any big plans today. Mr. Pickles is working at the farm until 2 or 3 and then lunch and maybe a walk later on. So basically just like every other day...lol

Since my shoulder was acting up again this week giving me the most amazing migraines I don’t really have much to share on the gardening front or Sewing front. Which doesn’t leave me much to talk about...Well I could go on and on about nothing I am quite good at that...but I like to have a post with pictures and it’s hard to take a picture of nothing...lol

Today I think I am going to try and cut a bit of fabric for the Sew Happy Geek QAL blocks that I am horribly behind on and get my mini quilt all quilted up. I also want to get my garden plan started.

I have started my garden plan a little bit. As you may recall I know what I am going to plant this year I just haven`t finalized what goes where. The Strawberries and Raspberries are going to stay where they are and this year I am thinking about putting two raised herb gardens at the end of the garden.

This is what I am thinking of, however I don`t know if it is going to give the herbs enough room. I plan of doing one at each end of the width of the garden and planting chamomile in-between them.

Herb garden for 2012?

Okay Off to draw up my plans (I tried on here but it doesn`t copy to blogger very well)

Sewing Saturday

Handmade by Heidi

Last night I took part in the Friday Night Sew In. I ended up only having 2 hours to spend sewing, however since that is about all I can take at one time it was 2 hours well spent. I didn’t get everything done that I wanted to, but I am happy with the results of what I made. The seam ripper didn’t even come out once...AMAZING but true...LOL

Okay so what did I end up making you may ask or not, but I am telling you anyhow so here we go.

First I completed my February block for group 2 of the We Bee Learning Bee.  Danielle had requested a log cabin and provided us with a nice an easy tutorial to make it the way she wanted. Her only requirement for colour was that the middle square be black and that the square should be girly. I had lent all my pinks to my mother so she could make her block. I was tempted to just do the exact same thing as her...but I thought that wasn’t too nice since Danielle would have two block the same. So I just used a few of the same fabrics and came up with this.

I think it might be a bit darker than the other ones being made and maybe a bit too busy, but I like it nonetheless. It was a really easy block to make. The only thing I didn’t care for was that I tried to press all my seams open. Using some tips from the lovely ladies in my bee it went a lot smoother than before, however I couldn’t get them to lie flat so the block won’t lay flat for me now either....oh well!

I then made 3 signature blocks. Two for my and one for my mother since she forgot to make one before giving me the block to send off. I know how to spell her last name and I know where she lives so it was easy enough..LOL
Sorry hid the name left the province though..lol

To finish the night I completed the top for my mini quilt for a swap I am in. I thought that I was almost done it however when I went to finish it I realized all I had done was drawn a picture and picked out fabric....!!! It didn’t take me long to put the whole thing together. I think it may be too simple, but she wanted something modern and this is all I could come up with. I just need to quilt this baby and then she is ready to send off. Any suggestions on how to quilt it? Sorry the picture is a little dark!!

So there you go that is what I got accomplished in the FNSI. Make sure you click the link and check out what other people from around the world were working on last night.

Happy Friday

After all the rush to get my valentines project finished, the rush to make an extra special valentines meal, going to the city to get highlights in my hair that I hate and am too much of a chicken to go back and complain..... I kind of ran out of steam and things to say.  Oh well it happens right!

Last week I saw that there was going to be a Valentines Quilt contest over at the Quilting Gallery and I thought hmmmm maybe if I get my mini heart quilt finished I would enter it. Since I did get the quilt done I figured why they heck not. Now I know there is no way I am going to win and I didn’t even enter for that reason.  I am just proud of it and wanted to show it off J There is a lot of really talented work being displayed by a lot of very talented ladies. So if you want to check it out click HERE and go and vote for whomever you like best!
My entry

I am also going to link my quilt up with the Valentine’s Day Showcase over at Sew Bittersweet Designs. After seeing all the lovely work being showcased on this blog hop it really inspired me to get my project finished. Voting for that one starts on the 21st-23 so go visit then and vote for your favourite! Until then go on over and check out Melissa site she is pretty darn talented!

Love (Two red hearts)

Tonight is also Friday Night Sew In so I am going to go and pick out what I am going to get done tonight, So far I want to work on Danielle’s block for the We Bee Learnin Bee, get my signature blocks done for the month and then hopefully set started on week 3 and 4 of the Sew Happy Geek QAL.  I also need to finish up my quilt for the name game swap. So there will be a lot of things on the go tonight!

I hope everyone else had a better week

Happy Valentine’s Day

Happy Valentine’s Day everyone!

I didn’t think it would happen, but I hoped it would I got 2 Valentine’s Day Projects finished before Valentine’s Day!!

I took part in the And Sew We Craft Valentines swap and decided to make my partner a mug rug and a candy basket full with yummy Lindt Chocolate. I forgot to take pictures of the basket, but this was the mug rug that I sent. I should have made myself another one since I just love this one to pieces.

I am also very happy to report that my package made if over to Jennifer over at the Frazzled Five in time for Valentine’s Day!

Thank you to And SewWe Craft for hosting this swap. I haven’t received anything from my swap partner yet (someone else, not Jennifer) However, I am sure it will be lovely.

Back in November I had signed up for a blog hop that required you to have a 12x14 table top mini quilt frame. I didn’t have one and wanted to take part so once the Christmas sales came on I bought one online. Unfortunately the blog hop went bust, but I still had the frame and figured I was still going to make something for February anyhow.

Since Valentines Day’s is in February I wanted to make something with a heart in it. It took me a few days to figure out what size blocks to make and how to plan it all out. However once that was all done it came together pretty easily and I finished it in 2 days.
So here is my little baby

It turned out better than I could have hoped for and I love it!

Okay now off to get our special Valentines lunch ready. We are going to have steak and crab legs using the raclette grill on the table.....YUMMMMMYYYY

Happy Valentine’s Day

House plants part III

I am not having the best of luck with my house plants...yet again. If you remember back in November I showed you a couple of my plants and how they were not doing that great. My lovely water plant has all but died. I don’t want to though it away since I have had it for over 10 years and it meant so much to me...but it is dead. Right now it is in the laundry room. The stem looks okay, but there are no leaves...

My bamboo is starting to yellow. I think I need to put it into a larger pot. It’s just so tall

I don't know what kind of plant this is....but after 4 years it is blooming! I think that is a success story!

This is my cane plant. I had it in the living room and the leaves were starting to yellow, turn brown and die so figured it wasn’t getting enough light. We moved it into the kitchen in December and now I think it is doing worse than before. I am not sure what to do to help it!

This is the latest addition to my brown thumb house plant collection. All it says on the card that came with it is assorted foliage so I am not sure what it is. It was doing okay for about a week and then the ends started turned brown. It has a lot of light, it watered regularly and I have no idea how I am killing it.

At this rate I don't know if I should start growing seeds for the garden indoors....lol they might all die before its time to get them in the garden...lol

Take care,

Christmas QAL 2012 pt 2

Every 2nd Sturday -monthly

So I decided that I am going to make the mystery quilt. At first I was thinking....hmmm a Christmas quilt..I am already working on one do I need another one? Really how many Christmas themed quilts does one person need? I don't know maybe I need 50 and I only have one UFO...LOL Or maybe 1 is already too much...oh my!!

However, I then decided that maybe I would since it doesn't have to be a quilt maybe I could turn it into a wall hanging or a table cloth or something like that. I don't know if that will be a possibility since it is a mystery quilt and I don;t know what it is going to look like.

I figure I can pick my fabric and have it ready to go and when the time comes that there are more clues about what it is going to look like then I can cut it all up and start. It isn't race just a fun time to work on Christmas projects so all should be okay.

Okay so for the quilt it is suppose to be scrappy, but since all my Christmas fabric is brand new so kinda scrappy kinda not.....We need a background colour, light, medium and dark.....which is the hard part I am horrible at picking fabric to go together!

I decided on white for the background since what is lighter than white...light white...?? For my light I have this pretty tan/gold fabric with stars that I thought might work well. For the medium I have this red/black fabric that I love, but I don't think it will work and then just a plain green. Hmmm I don't love this combo, but it is okay

What about this?? Too Busy...too green on green..too blah

Okay back to the stash to pick some new options for the dark and medium....I have blues...hmmmm blues yes blues would be great....

You might be thinking wow all she has done is picked or almost picked fabric. You are right! I also got distracted and started working on my Feb block for the we bee learning bee....oops. In addition to that Mr.Pickles was suppose to be home at 3 for lunch. I decided to be stupid and try and make Pork Tenderloin en Croute. I just finished up everything and now I am waiting for him to call and say he is on is way home before i start to cook the sucker in the oven..........its now 4pm by the way....I think lunch is now going to be dinner!

Christmas QAL 2012

I am late I am late for a very important date!!

This morning I was going through my Christmas fabric thinking of that I could work on for the Christmas QAL 2012 that is starting today. I ended up getting lost in my room and then as I was about to start sewing I thought what the heck am I doing working with Christmas fabric!!! I forgot to write a post today and came to the kitchen to write me sewing Saturday post. ....LOL Idiot. I only remembered that today was the start of the Christmas QAL 2012 after I started reading posts on it....oh my. Maybe Mr. Pickles spiked my morning smoothie!
So I am a bit late to the party and wasted a post I could have used for tomorrow.....but oh well you will be getting a lot from me today

Blog Button
So what is the Christmas QAL? It is a QAL that happen the 2nd Saturday of every month. It gives us all a chance to work on our Christmas projects though out the year. This year there is going to be a different hostess each month and a mystery quilt! You don’t have to make the quilt...just whatever you want, but you get to link up your work and make a few posts throughout the day on your progress. I sat on the sidelines last year, but this year I am taking part!

This month’s hostess is Hazel over at Hazel Quilts and she has the linky party all set up and there are a ton of ladies already posting. I will be updating throughout the rest of the day on what I am doing and linking up! Merrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrry Christmas!!!
