Week 11/12

It’s sad to say but we are nearing the end of the garden. It is hard to believe that it will be September on Saturday!! They are calling for our first frost to be September 7th so that could mean that the garden is done in just over a week....WOW. I hope that is not the case as my tomatoes are nowhere near being ready and I am not ready for fall to start!

Okay enough silly talk let’s take a look at the garden at week 11/12

Here is the main garden.
Not a lot of changes. Looking at last year everything is now a good 3 weeks behind where it was last year. I am not too happy about that, but at least it gives me time to work on some sewing as everything starts to ripen
The sunflowers are still towering over the garden. Well that was until the wind storm we had on Saturday.
However, they are still lovely!

The cauliflower and broccoli that I planted from seed are a little slow and nothing is starting yet.

The potatoes may be a bust. We dug up one plant and got 4 potatoes. They should be ready as we are past the 90 day mark.

The mixed plot of lettuce, beets, kohlrabi, spinach and carrots is doing well. The lettuce is done for the year. It hasn’t started to bolt yet so I am going to leave it and continue to harvest a few leaves when we need it
The spinach is all done. It was great on Friday and then after the little storm everything tuned yellow. Very disappointing since we hardly ate/preserved any of it!!!

The volunteer cherry tomatoes have really taken over this section. I am leaving them since they keep the weeds down, but won’t bother covering them when the frost hits.

The tomatoes are still doing okay. They are slowly ripening and I see a lot of canning in the next week!!

The eggplants are not doing anything and I am thinking we won’t be having them this year. I am saddened by that since I started the seed back in March...they should be ready now!
I started the peppers at the same time and guess what.....we have peppers!!

The peas are just about done as are the beans. I am going to pick the rest of both over the next few days, the soy beans are not doing much either and I don’t see us having any this year either

The cucumbers continue to grow . Look at this bug sucker holding on!

This poor guy got stuck...LOL

The new garden is still doing well. However, I don’t think there will be any pumpkins or spaghetti squash this year. My aunt said that her pumpkin only had done female flower this year. I didn’t check mine so I may have encountered the dame problem.

So there is week 11 and 12!
have a great day

Thursdays Kitchen Cupboard

Here we are at that time of the week again Thursdays Kitchen Cupboard. I will be linking up over at The Gardener or Eden's site.

I haven’t been doing as much preserving as I should. I am not sure what is going on this year, but I am just too tired to get anything done. However, I have been trying to get a bit done when I can.

Mr. Pickles picked me a big ole bag full of cucumbers and I turned them into dill slices. I like that it doesn’t take much to make these, but not too thrilled that I have to process them..Still too hot here for that..LOL

Mr.P picked another 10 or so pounds of cukes last night so I am sure I will be making a few more pickles this year.

I also got some of my broad beans picked, blanched and froze. It sure is a pain in the butt to shell those little buggers. I must say though I am happy that I left them on a little longer since the larger beans are oh so yummy!

They were so yummy after blanching that I kept snacking on them!!

I ended up with 4 bags with 2 cups each. I should have enough beans out in the garden to get a couple more bags or at least enough for a few more fresh feedings.

Tonight I am going to try and get my cauliflower in the freezer as well as some cabbage. I read online that you can cut up cabbage and freeze it to use in soups. I am going to give it a try and see what happens.

I hope everyone else is doing great

Thursdays Kitchen Cupboard 23/08/2012

Today's hosts on the Bowls hop are
*************************************************

This past week has been another one where we spent most of our time in the city going to Doctor Appointments. It fine that we have to go to so many appointments, but it really interferes with cooking at home and getting anything done in the garden.

I did end up getting a bit preserved so I am linking up with Thursdays Kitchen Cupboard hosted by Robin, The Gardener of Eden.

On Friday I made a huge batch of borsht for my dad’s birthday. I ate a couple of bowls and saved a 1L jar for myself the rest went to him. I didn't take a picture of its on its own so you will have to look past the veggies to see it!

On Saturday our cabbages were exploding so I had to bring in as many as I could. I have 3 sitting in the fridge, sent one to my parents and used 1 and a half to make 3 more jars of sauerkraut.

On Saturday I also sliced up some cucumbers to make one more batch of fridge pickles. I thought we were running low until I actually looked in the fridge and found 9 1L jars....OH MY. I am not going to be making any more fridge pickles this year for sure! I didn't take a picture but they were yummy :)

I still have quite a bit that need to be preserved ASAP. Spinach, Cauliflower, Broccoli, Green Beans, Broad beans, Cabbage, and Cucumbers are all ready and need something to be done with them.

Does anyone have any good cabbage recipes they would like the share?

Have a great day

I really feel like I have been getting a lot of sewing done this month, however when I look back I haven’t gotten much done at all.....LOL Oh well I am waiting for some fabric to arrive and I have to go into the city to buy some more fabric too so that has kind of brought things to a halt as well.

Today I am linking up with WIP Wednesday over at Freshly Pieced and @The Needle and Thread Network.  Make sure you hop on over there and see what everyone else is working on too.

We Bee Learning group one block for Rita- Postage stamp blocks. This should be fun and will really get me working on perfect seams! Rita has a great tutorial HERE. I have started saving all my scraps and putting them into different bags. I have quite a few squares so I am going to try and make one block just matching up squares and then if that doesn’t work I am going to use her tut to do the rest...lol

Bee Creative 2012 block – It’s my month to host. I am asking for The Classic Paint box blocks from Ohfransson.com I ordered a precut pack of 10’ squares so I can finish this quilt on my own....can’t wait to get my fabric and everyone’s blocks!!

My Stop On Bowls with Borders Blog Hop

Hello and welcome to my stop on the Bowls with Borders Blog Hop!

I would like to thank Regina for creating this lovely pattern and allowing all of us hoppers to use it! I would also like to thank our Head Cheerleader Madame Samm for creating this hop and the lovely Carol for organizing it!

On T.V there is a commercial that says NO ONE IS GOOD AT EVERYTHING.....but EVERYONE IS GOOD AT SOMETHING! I found that to really hit home with this blog hop....LOL

This is my 2nd attempt at paper piecing.  After my first attempt back in January I swore NEVER AGAIN! When Madame Samm first came out with her idea of doing a bowl swap I thought LOVE THE PATTERN, but nowhere near that kind of skill level to take part. When the swap turned into a hop I thought....dare I try again???

I had seriously outrageous goals of what I was going to create and although the pattern was great and really easy to follow.....my brain just kept going huh? Whaa? Duh? Bang Boom.. Lights out...LOL

This is what I ended up with

It’s not the 6 bowl masterpiece I thought I was going to make, but I love it all the same. I tried really hard and ended up with something that I think is presentable....I hope you all feel the same way too!!

Thanks for stopping by I hope you had an interesting time at least. Now go on and see what my co-hosts created for today!!

Week 10

Today's hots for the Bowls with Borders Blog hop are
****************************************************************************

Week 10 what the heck!!!! Wow the weeks just fly by don’t they?

The garden is still doing great. It is behind about 2 weeks over last year. However, I ended up planting it two weeks later and the weather hasn’t been that great lately. So let’s just say everything is behind except for the plants I started indoors they of course are ahead of schedule...lol

I didn’t take a week 10 photo of the main garden since it looks exactly the same every week...lol

Some of the highlights are

My cucumbers continue to grow on the trellises

The broad beans are getting bigger

The cabbages are HUGE

Okay they look smaller in the photo, but I would say they are about 4 pounds each

This is the last of the early cauliflower

And the tomatoes are big producers this year. full of LARGE fruit!

Nothing is ripe yet, but everything has outgrown their cages.

The zucchini are looking a little sickly, but they should still be okay

First hot pepper of the season

Here is a picture of the new garden. As you can see the pumpkin and squash are growing like crazy.

The cabbage is doing well over here...except for this one that split. I am going to use it today

The spaghetti squash are getting a little mildew action I hope that doesn’t stop growth

I haven’t been able to find a pumpkin yet, but there are quite a few little squash

Today I have a little garden helper. Usually she goes to the farm with Mr.Pickles, but today he is doing field work and Oma is in the city so Zada would be at the farm alone. So far she had almost ran away twice and is now crying in the house as I type this.

 Have a great day
