Garden review sections 4 and 5

Okay moving on with my 2012 garden review. Today I am going to go over sections 4 and 5
Both sections were both successes in my book even though they had some issues
Section 4
Brussels sprouts 2 10ft rows – Seedlings I started these indoor and when I planted them they were looking amazing. However within a few weeks the bugs got to them and they never seemed to recover. By September there were little sprouts starting to grow, but they were pulled before they could produce. The ones started from seed planted directly into the garden did fair better as they outgrew the transplants by quite a bit. They however did not have time to fully mature either. Plan for 2013: start seeds indoors earlier.

Broccoli 3 10ft rows - This was another surprise and disappointment. I planted both seedlings and direct sowed seeds into the garden. The surprising thing was that they both matured at the same time. In fact once again I found the direct sewn seeds to mature quicker than the seedlings. I think this had to do with the amount of moisture we received during the summer. I was able to harvest well into fall which was quite the surprise. I ended up with 5.996kg.so it was still a good year. Plan for 2013: plant the same

Pack Choi 2 10ft rows Pack Choy both did better and worse than I had hoped. It grew so that is always a good sign, but it was so tiny that it couldn’t really be used as a come again crop. I tried to leave it longer to baulk up, however it than just bolted. . Plan for 2013: try again, but in different area

Cauliflower 3 10 ft rows- I did 2 rows of transplants and only one row of direct seed. I found their growth to be much like the broccoli in that they all matured at the same time. It was a good year nonetheless and I harvested 14.763kg Plan for 2013: plant the same

Cabbage 2 10 ft rows- it was a great year for cabbage in fact maybe too good of a year. Every one of the cabbages was started indoors and they were all huge. I harvested 18.07kg .I did have a problem with them splitting near the end of the season but that was my problem not the cabbage.lol Plan for 2013: plant the same

Section 5 Potatoes
Yukon gold 4 10ft rows. They were not a great producer this year and were overcome with scab. The potatoes were also all mutated and in strange shapes. Harvested 47.993kg Plan for 2013: as this is the 3rd year I have been unhappy with them I think I may omit them from 2013

Norland 3 10 ft rows. The norland fared much better. This was my first year growing norland and I am very happy with their taste and production. Harvested 52.019kg.  Plan for 2013: plant the same

Blue Russian 3 10ft rows. These potatoes also had scab this year. I haven’t even tried one yet so I cannot really comment on whether or not I will try them again next year.

Sewing Saturday

On Wednesday I sat down at the sewing machine to do a little free motion quilting on our wonky star quilt.

This started off with an hour of swearing at the darning foot and breaking two needles. I finally got one whole row done when the darning foot started acting up again. I had to wait a whole day for Mr.P to have time to see what I was doing wrong. However, once he took about 2 minutes to tighten the foot and explain to me that I was adjusting stitch width instead of length which was also buggering everything up I was ready to go.
On Friday after whining about not getting good deals online like I did last year I ended up back at the sewing machine.

It took me a couple of hours....buuuuuut

I got it all done!! It’s not perfect, but I am really happy with the end result. This is my first time ever quilting an actual quilt size quilt. I have done wall hangings, mug rugs and such, but never a whole quilt.

My mother is our basement (where they are living while their house is getting built) putting on the binding as I type this. I now need to get my blocks sewn for the 2nd quilt we are making.

have a great day

Whiny Friday :P

Well I have been up since 7:30 shopping in my P.J's and other than internet viewing nausea I don't have much to show for it. Last year I was able to get some AMAZING deals on fabric, books and electronics

This year....not much of anything. Oh I did buy some fabric...that wasn't on sale mind you, however, I was putting off buying some backing fabric and some white fabric until the "Sales" started. Since there was nothing on sale that appealed to me I just bought what I needed and checked out..lol

Now I am sad, grumpy and ready to go back to sleep...but I can't since now it is time to get up...lol

Okay enough whining for one day. I have a quilt top that I would like to finish quilting today so I better put on my big girl panties and woman-up...lol

WIP 21/11/2012

HOLY COW this month is going by so darn fast....its almost DECEMBER!!!
I have been trying to get as much done as I can, however i have had a migraine for 21 consecutive days. At least it lets up a wee bit from time to time to just a really bad headache and I have been able to get a few things done.

Today I am linking up with WIP Wednesday over at Freshly Pieced and @The Needle and Thread Network.  Make sure you hop on over there and see what everyone else is working on too.

I think that there was an error in the pattern as there was no chance of mine seams matching and if you look at the top one everything is wayyyy off. I trimmed the other 3 up and they will all be too small. I recall reading that there was an error in the pattern...but I never wrote it down....boooooo

2012 Garden Review Sections 1-3

I have finally put together my garden review for 2012. It took some time, since I kept forgetting to type it out, but it is finally done. I am going to start section by section and will outline what was planted, total amount harvested and whether or not I would do it again. Today I am just going to go over sections 1-3 otherwise this would be one long post!

Section 1 Herbs
This year I once again tried planting a varied selection of herbs at the front of the garden and yet again this was not a success. The problem is that that section is particularly weedy and that once everything starts to come up I am unsure if it is the herbs I planted or just grass so  I wait and let it grow, the grass chokes out the herbs and nothing grows. Volunteer sunflowers did grow nicely in this section, however if they come up next year they are getting pulled..lolPlan for 2013: make a raised herb bed

Section 2 Strawberries and Raspberries
This year neither fruits were great producers. The strawberries bloomed early, but with a late frost never produced one berry. The Raspberries on the other hand bloomed in late August and an early fall frost left us with bushes full of frozen unripe berries. . Plan for 2013: Since this was the 3rd year the strawberries did not produce they were tilled over. The raspberry bushes will be left, thinned and transplanted to fill the remainder of the row

Section 3 Onions
4 -10ft rows of red onions Although these were the first to start sprouting halfway through the growing season they started to bolt even though they were not much larger than the sets I originally planted. Thus at the end of the summer I was only able to harvest a dozen. Plan for 2013: Try a different variety

3- 10ft rows of leeks from seed   The leeks planted from seed directly into the garden did not take at all. .

2 -10ft rows of transplanted leek seedlings Leeks were another disappointment, the ones that I started indoor did mature in time although rather sparsely. However the frost got to them before I could and they were therefore not harvested. Plan for 2013: plant the same but start indoors earlier

5- 10ft rows of yellow onions The White onions fair a bit better although most of them were the size of a golf ball where as last year they were the size of a softball. I was still able to get 15lbs altogether so I cannot complain too much. . Plan for 2013: plant the same, but in different area.

2- 10ft rows of bunching onions Did not produce

1- 10ft row pickling onions  Pickling onions were a no show this year as well. I think it was just too wet. . Plan for 2013: not going to try again

2 -10ft rows of spinach  The spinach started in this section did not take at all. One plant survived. . Plan for 2013: plant in different drier area

So there you go those are the first 3 sections of the garden. My overall view of these sections was a fail. As I mentioned above the herbs, strawberries, raspberries, leeks, pickling onions, bunching onions, and spinach were total busts. The red and white onion sets did not grow big enough to last the winter. I only have about 20 onions left and we are still in 2012!

Have a great day

Sewing Saturday

Last night was...

Handmade by Heidi

So I thought I would join along and try to get a wee bit of sewing done.

The problem was I didn't know what to do...lol I know I know I have a HUGE to do list, but my printer wasn't and still is not working so I couldn't print off the instructions that I needed. So I started to tidy up and got side tracked about a million times and then I thought....Hey I can work on my 2011 BOM

These stems are going to be joined to tulips and daises  The turned out quite well. However, for being a quilt store BOM the fabric is rather sub-par. This means that I am now caught up till May and can start on June

have a great day

Preserving the harvest 2012

Yesterday I showed you all the canning that I got done for 2012. Today I am going to show you everything that I froze for 2012. There are a couple of pictures that I cannot seem to find, but for the most part I think this is everything.
Okay starting at the top left and going clockwise: Chives, cauliflower and broccoli,Broad beans, zucchini  Rhubarb  Carrots, Spinach, Zucchini, spinach zucchini, broad beans, cauliflower and cauliflower broccoli

This year I had a really hard time preserving fruits and veggies from the garden since I just did not have the energy to do very much. I really pushed myself to at least get something done so it did not all go to waste and therefore beat myself up even more. Looking back I am a little ashamed of how little I canned/froze, but something is better than nothing!!

Canning recap

This year I didn’t get anywhere near the amount of canning I have done in the past. The late frost that we got in May/June really hurt my fruit trees. The Saskatoon berries didn’t produce this year, and that left out at least 30 jars of jam or jam related canning. The crab apple tree didn’t produce either so that also meant no apple butter or jelly. I also cut back on the cucumbers this year too. 3 years ago I was canning upwards of 100 jars of pickles and this year it was under 20!

Starting at the top left. 4 Sauerkraut, 3 Sauerkraut, 2 fridge pickles, 8 dill slices
8 salsa(hot), 8 bruschetta, 7 whole tomato, 15 crushed tomtato
18 tomato sauce(8not shown), 7 whole tomato, 8 salsa, 4 whole tomato and 10bbq sauce

I did pretty well get everything canned that I wanted to though. I have enough salsa and tomatoes to get us through the year. The lack of canning this year also means that I have really been able to put a dent into canning from the past couple of year. I also froze quite a bit of produce this year....but that is for another post :)

Christmas QAL post 3

After ripping and resewing a few times I finally have the borders all on. I was correct when I said that they wouldn't match up quite right.....but I am still happy with the way that it turned out

Now I just need to buy some backing and batting and hopefully I can get this done before Christmas!

Christmas QAL post 2

Okay I have put on the top borders!

The top one is a bit too long and the bottom one is a bit short. However, I took them apart and tried them the other way and it still ended up being the same...lol How does that work...lol I think that is going to screw up my side borders when I put it on...but we shall see. I am not interested in taking apart all the qst's and starting over..bah humbug to that...lol

Christmas QAL-November

Its the 2nd Saturday in the month that means....its Christmas QAL time!
Photobucket

Today’s host is the lady that started it all and designed our uber cool mystery quilt...Quiltsue!

So lets start the day off where I finished last month. I had finally sewn all my blocks together and started putting my borders together.

However, if you notice above I had one small error...One darn four patch block turned the wrong way!! So i had to rip it out and try to put it back in. I did it and it is a bit off, but good enough.

Today’s plan is to get the borders on.

The end of canning

Well I did it !!!!! I used up all of my tomatoes....okay well that is a lie I still have one 10lb box in the laundry room. However, I have finished  canning tomatoes for the year. The rest are just going to be used for everyday use..lol

I attempted to make bbq sauce for the first time ever. It is okay I think it needed a few more things, but I didn’t want to change the canning recipe. Therefore when I reheat the sauce I will just add in what I want. I really wanted a recipe that didn’t have cloves...but I couldn’t find one so it is on the clovey side. We used a jar on Sunday to make ribs and it was tasty

I also made one more batch on whole tomatoes for the simple reason that it is easy to do and you use up a lot of tomatoes..lol

This should be the last of my canning for 2012, unless I decided to make some red pepper jelly for Christmas.

Now its time to tally up everything I froze and canned to see how productive I was this year...stay tuned for that

Blog angels review

As some of you may or may not know I signed up to be a blog angel for the month of October over at Craftbotic. The goal was to secretly help out your assigned blogger for the first 15 days of the month and then to reveal yourself and see what kind of help your blogger wanted. I was assigned Ana from http://www.chanelledcreations.blogspot.co.uk/.

Ana wanted her blog angel to comment on her site, unfortunately she did not post on a regular basis during the past month. I did send her an e-mail telling her who I was and asked how I could help, but I never received a reply back. Therefore, nothing happened ...so no help provided.

On the other hand the person who was assigned to be my blog angel was very sweet. I had asked for help on blog design and she provided me with some templates to use on picmonkey to create my own headers. Cambrie also created me a cute little header and gave me the names of some gals that can give my blog an overhaul. So thank you Cambrie!!  You may have helped to create a monster though.....lol

So there were some positive and negative points to this new adventure. Would I take part again...Nope...I wasn`t pleased that within a week or joining I was being asked by the host for donations for her upcoming giveaway. That really tainted the whole experience for me. However, I am glad that I took part instead of sitting on the sidelines.

If my blog angel Ana reads this and would still like some help I am more than willing.

And once again a BIG THANK YOU to Cambrie for being my blog angel. You helped turn a negative experience into a positive one!
