Tomato woes

Well here it is in the middle of November and I'm still waiting on my tomatoes to ripen. I have them out in the back garage. It's likely too cool out there, however, as soon as I bring them in they go to bleep. The start to turn orange and then before they get nice and red they get spots and then turn moldy

I was able to save a few from another box and made a bit of salsa. I followed a new recipe and it's too sweet and the apple cider vinegar made it pretty tangy. However at least I was able to make something.

I have 4 more boxes out back that are just starting to turn. I'm not sure what will happen with them. I would like to make a few jars of whole tomatoes, but I don't see that happening. It's rather depressing to grow them from seed and then wait this long for them to turn to

Have a great day

  1. Sorry about your tomatoes. I've never had any luck with "saving" them.
I have to face facts that my season is just too short. All the toms I saved rotted. I don't think I'll be doing that anymore.
Happy Fall. I love your fall foliage background

  2. Oh, that's too bad about the tomatoes - each year there are always lessons to be learned, aren't there? I sure learned my fair share of them this year!

I've heard that if you harvest green tomatoes, they have the best chance of ripening up if you leave them in a warmish environment and many people place them in a sunny spot to speed up the process. I'm guessing that the cold garage was the cause of your issues. I leave my end-of-season green tomatoes on my kitchen counter/table and they ripen up fairly well there even though they don't get any direct sun. The only ones that I end up chucking are those with evidence of blight (they start to show brown blight blotches) or those that were too green to start with and just stay green.

  3. So sorry about your tomatoes. It looks like a large crop too. Your salsa looks amazing.

  4. Excellent site I have bookmarked your site..
