Use it or Lose it

I am going to start a little something on my blog that I am going to call Use it or lose it. Once a week I am going to try and use something from my cold room or the freezer that I stored away for the winter. I am really bad at growing all these yummy fruit and veggies, processing them and then not using them enough in the winter months. Well today that stops.

In addition to that I do feel like we waste quite a bit of purchased food. So I am going to try and get better at that and hold myself accountable. My use it or lose it posts will happen on random days and it might not always be about using up food!

I won’t be holding a linky party, but if anyone wants to join along feel free to do so and let me know. I will add your name in my post so people can see what you are up to too!

Used it
Last week we were only home for 2 days, but I was still able to use a few things from the cold room/freezer. I used 5 potatoes, 1 onion, 1 6oz package of spinach, 2 beef steaks (our own) and 1 1L jar of whole tomatoes.

The potatoes and ¼ of the onion were turned into garlic mash. Forgot to take a picture

The remainder of the onion, spinach and tomatoes were used to make a tomato sauce which accompanied our steak. (We also had store bough corn on the cob for those thinking there is a lack of veggies on this
note to self take better pictures....LOL

Lost it
1 whole pineapple went bad in a couple of days.

Next week’s game plan
From the freezer - I would like to use at least 4 different frozen veggies. Right now I have at least 20bags each of carrots, green beans, spinach, broccoli, and cauliflower. In addition to that I have about 10 bags of broad beans. So as you can see we better start eating these!
From the cold room- I would like to see 2 jars of the veggies used and 4 jars of the fruits. Using up my jams and other fruits is the hard part. I think I will try to use them in some desserts.
From other things that need to get used asap this week

So kind

I have had the honour to be nominated for the Liebster Award  twice in the past few weeks. I thought I would take the time to thank Danielle and Katie on my blog for being so darn kind!!

The Liebster award has been going around blogland for awhile although no one really know who started it. Liebster” Is a German word meaning dear, sweet, kind, nice, good, beloved, lovely, kindly, pleasant, valued, cute, endearing, and welcome. It is an award given by bloggers to other bloggers that have seen the above qualities in your blog.

As some of you may recall I have gotten in trouble nominating people for this award before so what I am going to do is answer both Danielle's and Katie’s questions and then invite you to check out some of the blogs in my blog list. Click on one you haven’t ready before and check them out.

Danielle's Questions were

1) What was the last book your read?  Right now I am reading the Game of Thrones Series. Just started book 3
2) Where was the last restaurant you went out to eat at - and why/with who. I went to Earls with my husband. We wanted the dynamite shrimp rolls
3) Have you ever painted your toe nails? yes I usually always have them painted some shade of pink
4) What is your favorite quote? "the greatest gift you'll ever learn is just to love & be loved in return" Nat King Cole
5) What is your favorite song? Oh I have A LOT of favourtie songs way too many to list. Although born in the 80's I am a big fan of music from the 50's-70's.

Katie's Questions were:

1. Biggest quilt inspiration? I get a lot of my inspiration from blogs
2. Favorite spot to get away? I would say anywhere in Europe
3. Why do you blog? Its a nice way to get all the extra thoughts out of my head
4. What is one thing from earlier in your life that you wish was still available today? My
5. Favorite TV show? Big Bang Theory
6. Favorite place to get fabric? Connecting Threads
7. What are your thoughts on scraps? I have a lot, but don't use enough
8. Where do most of your quilts end up? as gifts to family
9. Favorite time of year? Christmas
10. What are you most proud of in your life? This is a hard one, right now I am at a point where I don't feel I have anything to be proud of in my life. I am sure there are a bunch, hopefully I will remember them. Maybe I will make a list and put it somewhere to remind me
11. What kind of quilting helper do you have? Mr. P is my quilting helper. He goes to quilt stores with me, helps me pick fabric  gives me positive feed back when I beat myself up and fixes the sewing machine when I am sure I have broken it

Thank you to Danielle and Katie for nominating me for such a thoughtful award! I hope that you go and check out their blogs and and I just know you will enjoy your time over there.

Trust Issues

The day after we returned from Mexico I got a pre-recorded call from my credit card company telling me that someone had made some suspicious purchases on my card. The message than told me what they were and gave me the option to accept or decline. They were all charges from a video game arcade and totaled 1000 bucks. It then gave me the option to talk to someone about it. I waited on hold for 40mins and then I was hung up on...nice

I of course started to panic went online to confirm that it actually was my credit card company calling and called the number on the back of my card. After another 45min wait I spoke to a rep that told me my card had been copied and went over the charges with me. We don’t use our credit card a lot so there were only a few options of where it was copied.

I assumed it was from our recent trip to Mexico, but I was told that since they have my pin it would have been somewhere I used it 2 months ago. That made it even scarier since in the past 2 months I had only used it a 3 places Canadian Tire, Sears and London drugs.  However the charges appeared to be from an online store so they wouldn’t need my pin I figure so I didn’t trust what she was saying. However, the only places I bought at online were Kobo and Connecting Threads.

I just read a post from connectingthreads (click the link to take you to that post) saying that their site released customer’s credit card information without their knowledge. The claim that anyone affected by this was sent a letter. I haven’t received anything yet, but I am thinking chances are this is where my credit card info was stolen.

So here is my question. If you have been burned by one of your favourite you go back and buy from them again?

I don’t know my answer to that yet. I am pretty sure I would use my credit card again at the physical stores where the card could have been copied, but I am feeling a little shy about using it at an online store again. Now I understand that if it was the online store that leaked my info they should have better security now which means it’s even safer to buy there, but as the saying goes. Once bitten twice shy

My credit card company has reversed the charges, issued a new card and are looking into the matter. I don't know where it was copied so my theories are just theories.

Tuesday mismash

Okay I am back yet again. Oh my it has been a crazy couple of weeks. That little ole flu bug really threw my system for a loop. Just when I thought I was over it, it came back for a little visit! I do have some of my energy back now, but that woozy feeling isn’t too far away. At least I have been spending a little less time in the bathroom and I am blogging again!

I have been up to absolutely nothing at all! I haven’t done any sewing or sowing!! I have hardily even cooked a meal or cleaned the house, so now I am very behind on everything and the thought of that makes me sick...oh my oh my. Oh well start with something little and I will eventually get caught up.....right!

So what do you write about when you have done nothing to write about? Ummmm ...hmmmmm...let me see now.... How about the weather..Yeah weather sounds good. It has been a strange few weeks here in Saskatchewan we have gone from above zero to -42C with the wind chill in the matter of a few days. It sure does a number on ya! And the snow oh my it just doesn’t want to seem to want to stop snowing. I for one am sick of it! I know some of you are thinking oh snow I would love snow. Well to you I say come for a visit stay for a week where you have to really experience snow. I mean travelling the icy blown in unsalted highways, shovelling your driveway until you can’t feel your body, having to walk to your car with a nasty wind-chill where your eyelashes freeze together, always being cold and then let’s see what you think of snow...LOL You can even stay with me and hear my winter

Here is Zada’s kennel....

there is a house in there somewhere, but while it is snowed in the little bugger gets to sleep in the porch. I for one feel that since she is an “outside” dog anything warmer than -25C she should be outside. Mr. P doesn’t feel the same way and I haven't dug the house out, so she gets to stay inside. This usually keeps up until he wakes up to a poopy puppy in the porch than its time she goes outside. So until Zada makes a mistake she will stay

Now I need to vent for just a bit! I have to see a specialist in Alberta who requires blood work, but cannot requisition it since I live in Saskatchewan. My family Doctor quit and a walk in clinic doc won’t requisition the blood work for me. So after a 2 month search I found a new family doctor who requisitioned the blood work, but now she will not release the results to me or to the doctor in Alberta. I have to have an appointment to go over the blood work with her, but since she isn’t the specialist there is no reason for her to view the blood work. So I can make an appointment for a physical for May and at that time request a copy be sent and she will think about it. Or the specialist can send them a letter saying he wants the blood work, but guess what the specialist’s office says they have never had to do that before and therefore won’t do it. All I can say is WTF. My new family doctors receptionist who I was  dealing with finally said she would fax the info over, but I was told I had to bring a hard copy as well. She wouldn’t budge on that which I think is stupid since it’s my lap results, but whatever. I just have to hope that she sends the info and that the specialist doesn’t chew me a new one when I see him or cancels my appointment or removes me from the waiting list...oh boy stressful times! So needless to say that ruined my day.

Keep Warm

I think I am getting better, but now I am just zapped of all and any energy. At least before when I was running to the bathroom 15+times a day I still had it in me to blog, do house work and so on. Now I am just too tired to

My contact from Aurifil was sending me the prizes and then I am to send them out to the winners. The package was sent back at the end of November/ beginning of December. I have contacted the company again to see if they have a tracking # for the package so we can see where it got stuck or lost!

As soon as they come in I will let you all know and get them out to you ASAP. Until then please accept my apologies  I am at a loss of what else to do.

2012 bee round up

In 2012 I took part in 5 online sewing bees. I had a lot of fun and learnt so much that I can really look back on the year and be happy. Now I am not saying it was all perfect quite a few of the things I learnt were negatives, but it helped me grow as a person and a quilter and for that I am thankful.  I hadn’t done a post showing you all the blocks I got back so I figured why not today.

January was We Bee Learning group one and two I have shown a few times. This was my first time hosting a bee and I wasn’t really sure what I was getting myself into. For the most part it was stress free as long as everyone was making their I felt like I really got to know the ladies in the bee the most since like me the majority of them had blogs and liked to post on flickr quite a bit!
What did I learn from this bee? Well I learnt that what my idea of a certain colour is not everyone else’s. The first block on the left in the last row was what my idea of what the group one quilt would look like, but that wasn’t exactly how is ended up. This was a very important lesson that all new bee’s fall victim to. I still love the quilt and will use it, but it was a good lesson to learn.

International Stashes I requested a carpenter wheel in various colours.

In this group there were only 11 of us so I still have to make one more block for myself. This bee really challenged me since in my mind there really wasn’t one easy block! This was good and bad. Good since I made blocks that I would have NEVER thought I could make and succeeded at making them. Although I would dread every month thinking it would be too hard once you took a look at the pattern even the hardest looking block was pretty easy! The bad was that some of the blocks were HUGE and more than one was requested on a few occasions. The petty person in me didn’t care for this. I know that makes me a bad person, but I figure a bad person would have bailed since they were being selfish like me and instead I kept at it. For my month I found the biggest block I could for none of the right reasons. Now the block ended up being one a really wanted so it worked out in the end, but this bee taught me a lot about some unpleasant things about myself

Wonky Bee where we sent out fabric I created a little starburst block for them to make.  The missing block is mine since the charm pack only had enough fabric for 11 of these. I think I will do a block to tie them all together, but not sure on that yet

I learnt a lot of wonky techniques in the bee and really enjoyed getting the fabric in the mail every month. However, it was quite a bit more expensive for me to take part in this bee. For my month the block I had really wanted was going to cost my over 100 to mail out the fabric. So I settled on something else and now I don’t know what I am going to do with it. All the fabric is from the same charm pack, but for some reason it doesn’t seem to work together...LOL

Bee creative I asked for a paint box blocks.  Only 2 ladies sent me blocks the lovely bee mama sent me 4(one missing in this pic) so I am missing 18 blocks. This is a huge disappointment especially since my month was August and I had sent everyone else blocks. I made the choice not to send any more until I got my blocks, but no one ever posted again.

So there you go that is my 2012 bee round up for the blocks people made for me. If I get my butt in gear I will do a post on all the blocks I made.
have a great day

Do you see smoke? lol

Last night my mother in law called asking for her grow lamps back since she wants to start her seedlings. That got me thinking about 2 things. One I should start thinking about starting my seedlings and two if she takes the lights then how exactly are I going to grow these seedlings. Last year they were surplus lights, this year I guess not?

In 2012 we ran into a lot of problems finding the right bulbs and then once we found them we couldn’t find the right lamps to put them in. We were told by more than one place that they don’t carry them anymore. So that has me thinking even more.

Do I start seeds indoors this year or not?
Person with question mark

Now I know I won’t be breaking the bank if I buy a few of my veggies at the greenhouse. Normally the only ones I buy are cabbage, pumpkins, spaghetti squash and tomatoes. I also buy all my flowers at the greenhouse. Last year it was only the tomatoes and the flowers. This year I was hoping it would only be a few tomatoes and a few flowers, but now that the lights have to go I am not so sure.

I want to have twice as many cabbages this year so it is a no brainer that I start them from seed myself. Veggie 6 packs last year were still around 4-10 bucks at the time I wanted to plant them, which was pretty late in the year! I have also found that more and more greenhouses are moving away from the 6pack and going with just a single plant for the same amount. I’ll be the first to admit I am cheap so not interested in paying more than I need

If I am already starting the cabbage than I might as well do a few pumpkin and spaghetti squash too maybe just 3 of each? I than start to think that I should to broccoli and cauliflower again this year too. I usually just sow direct into the garden, but last year I did both seedlings and direct sow .They all matured at the same time

Then if I am doing all of that I might as well start my peppers and eggplants a little earlier this year too instead of just scrapping them from the garden. However, if I am keeping them in than do I try leeks again? Will the 3rd time

Okay see what thinking can do... and I haven’t even gotten to the flowers...oh boy FLOWERS!! Every year I spend about 100 of flowers. I usually do about 15+ baskets so it could be worse. However, I buy them in May and they don’t really bloom until July and then by august they start to die. So I was thinking that I should just start a few of my own and then I can have blooms all summer. I kept all the little 6packs my flowers came in last year. So I think I may try....GULP!!

Okay that is enough thinking for now...can you hear the gears you see smoke....

Have a great day

Well Remember by Log Cabin’s DONE!!!!!

I started this quilt back in 2009 when I took a learn to quilt log cabin class. Well I put on my big girl panties and finished the sucker!!! I am uber proud of myself!!

Since it is Wednesday I thought I would link up with WIP Wednesday over at Freshly Pieced and @The Needle and Thread Network.  Make sure you hop on over there and see what everyone else is working on too.

Bye Bye Penny!

Okay it has been way to long since I had a real post! I kind of got out the blogging mode while on vacation and then I just don’t know what happened to the past week!! I seemed to have misplaced it and have no idea what I did.... okay well I had 600 posts to catch up on and I skimmed though every darn one of them. I posted on a few, but for the most part I just skimmed in Google Reader. I know I could have just marked them all as read, but I didn’t want to miss

How now I am all caught up and ready to start posting again. I have a big finish to show you tomorrow that I am OH SO HAPPY about! I will be posting more on that tomorrow. For today I thought I would just write about a little piece of Canadian history.

Yesterday was the last day that the Canadian Mint distributed pennies.

Yep that’s right the penny will no longer be used in Canada! The penny was first issued back in 1885 and last year the government decided that it was just too expensive to make and had no real use anymore. They say there are upwards or 30 billion pennies are in circulation at this moment and they will still be accepted as payment, however stores will not be handing them out and will be rounding to the nearest nickel. As businesses collect the pennies they will send them back to the mint to be melted down into scrap metal. For more information check out this link

So that is it Good Bye Penny may you rest in piece
