Belated Merry Christmas

Well this post is exactly what the title indicates....

A Belated Merry Christmas to all

Mr.P got home safe and sound from Pella on the 20th and we simply spent the days leading up to Christmas getting ready for the big day.

On the 24th we went over to my Mother's to celebrate. It was hard not having my Dad there, but we just tried not to think about it and we made it through the day.

We usually get together with all my dad's family on the 25th, but the three of us thought it would just be too hard this year. So we hosted Mr.P's family at our house on the 25th and had my mother over as well. I thought she would feel less out of place if we had the get together at our house vs my mother-in-laws as we normally do.

So long story short......We made it through our first Christmas without my Dad. It was hard, beyond hard, but like I said we just all tried not to think about it and just went on the best we could.

It will be hard, but not as hard to celebrate New years eve tomorrow. We had our traditions for that night as well and part of me keep expecting to hear from him. But as he would say "It is what it is"

If I don't make it back online for the 1st.

Happy New Years to all as well!!
Wishing you all the best in 2014

Christmas Appies

One of my most favourite times of the year is when my mother and I get together to make our Christmas Appetizers and cookies
We have been making cookies for as long as I can remember and started our appetizer tradition well over 10 years ago. As the years passed we perfected our selections adding a few, deleting even more and finally settling on a few must haves. Our must haves are ham tartlets, Parmesan bites, mushroom turnovers, cheese puffs, crab wontons and this year we tried something new....cheesey spinach bites. In addition to this we always make rollo cookies, rum balls and short bread cookies.
This year it was hard to get excited about making them. As much as we enjoy making the appies, my Dad enjoyed his job as taste tester/quality control even more. He would talk about it for days leading up to the big day saying he hoped there were lots of mistakes that he would have to get rid of. He would come home early from work and sing our praises as he picked out all the ones he deemed unpresentable and sit back and enjoy them with a HUGE smile on his face.

Last year we made them mere days before we found out the bad news so at least he was able to enjoy them one last time. This year we contemplated not making them, but we couldn't not make them. It just seemed like we would be dishonoring his memory if we didn't carry on the tradition.

So we made them, well I didn't get to help as much as normal due to my baby pain, but they got done. They all taste amazing, but every bite is bittersweet.

Have a great day

WIP 18/12/13

Oh my where did the last week go! I didn't get anywhere near what I wanted to get done done..what else is new, right...lol!
Mr. P got sent last minute to Pella, Iowa for training so we crammed in as much Christmas shopping/getting nursery ready and other honey-do list things in as we could. Really who gives a guy a week notice that he has to leave the county for a week one week before Christmas with a pregnant wife at home.

I am also still in a lot of pain which makes not having Mr.P at home difficult. I can't lift my legs so getting dressed is a challenge...lol I see my Dr today so hopefully he can offer some insights into the pain I have been having.

Okay I got off topis....LOL I did get one step closer to being finished with the baby quilt. I sewed all the rows together and squared it up. That resulted in a few 4 patches getting a little smaller, but it did help to make the quilt look A LOT less wonky. Last night I sewed on the borders and guess what.....after all my bellyaching I must say it didn't turn out too bad. Yes there are mistakes a plenty, but I can live with them. Thank you for all the support you have given me during this process, its been a challenge and a half!

Okay I should have smoothed it out more before I took the pic, but bending over with this belly isn't worth it..lol It's not quite as puckered in real life

I also started on my table runner. I know I am cutting it close, but I want to try and get it done. I am making a wonky star table runner. There is a great tutorial over at http://cathy-blueberrypatch.blogspot.ca/2013/11/wonky-wony-little-star-table-runner.html
I  have my my star colours picked.

But I cannot decided if I want to go with a golden fabric for the background

Or white?

WIP 11/12/13

Do you ever feel like a failure?
Well I do most of the time in fact and this week has been no exception. It has to do with the fact that I am too hard on myself and worry too much about what other people think. Nonetheless, I am all for self growth and learning from my mistakes so I am not afraid of  posting about a project that is going rather wonky...LOL

I am still working on my baby quilt. I know some of you are thinking "HOW LONG HAS SHE BEEN WORKING AT THIS" Well its been a couple of weeks and I know most people would have had it done in a day. But I am trying my best.

As you will recall from Friday's post things are not going as smoothly as I thought they would. I have all the squares sewed together to make 7 rows and now have the rows sewed in pairs. Unfortunately, not all the rows are the same length...lol I am going to sew everything together today and then just square it up and add on the borders. It wont be perfect, but it will be one step closer to being done...lol
One step closer to being done!!

Stupid Instructions/Instruction reader

Okay I am posting 4 days in a row...oh my oh my oh my...LOL

Wednesday and Thursday I spent a few hours working on my baby quilt. Working with minky for the first time has been interesting. I pinned it A LOT, but of course it still stretches pretty good. It's that kind of material that stretches just by looking at it. Just when I thought I had the hang of it it would start to slip and my 1/4inch seams became 1/8inch seams and I would have to redo it. I don't think I would ever work with it again unless I really really had to.

The quilt it self is part of a kit that I bought locally. It was a great price and I really liked the fabric. If you recall I bought the kit almost 2 years ago. I was going to make the quilt for my cousin who was expecting, however, she has never been all that nice to me and I knew she wouldn't appreciate the quilt at all. So I kept the kit for a rainy day and gave her a store bought gift instead.

After getting all the rows done I am mad at myself and the instructions in the kit.

Okay not the best pic I just threw them on the floor in a big ole pout.

After making the 4 patch blocks it doesn't say anywhere in the instructions to square them up to 6.5 x 6.5. I squared them up a bit as the strips provided were not all a uniform width (although they should have been) For the most part the blocks were 6.5 x 7.5 and since 20 blocks came out the same size I figured that was the way they were suppose to be. Now the minky was required to be cut to 6.5 it didn't say 6.5 squared, but I assumed so since there was just enough fabric for the 17 6.5x6.5 squares. So after everything had been cut, I sewed 7 rows together and I start to lay it out I glance at the picture in the kit and it hits me.

In the picture all the seams match up nicely because all the blocks are obviously the same size. However, mine wont match up because the blocks are 2 different sizes!! Insert a few f-bombs here.

So now I am left with the question. Do I take it all apart and square up the 4 patch blocks or leave it and see if I can live with it. I think the only option I have it just to leave it as I squared up the rows before sewing them together so now my minky will be smaller. Part of me wants to the call the store I bought from and yell, but I bought it so long ago and I am at fault more than them. Arg so not the way I thought this would go. I am just to disappointed that I spent a good hour crying over the darn thing.

Today I am just going to sew all the rows together and just let it be. I am sure the baby wont care.

Have a great day

Bee Buzz 2014

Well it's that time of the year again all the quilting bee's are coming to an end and it is time to start thinking about the 2014 rounds. This time around I am sitting out since I am sure I will fall behind once the baby comes. However, I will still be keeping up with my hosting duties. We Bee Learning and We Bee New have already filled up.

However

I am looking for one new member for We Bee Canadian

and

5 new members for We Bee With it

If you are interested in taking part in either bee e-mail me or  leave a comment on this post.

WIP 04/12/13

I am finally getting back to sewing and it has been nice to have a few WIP reports to actually report about in the past few weeks. My big project to get done before Christmas keeps getting put on the back burner, but as I have been saying a lot lately in "real" life. I'll do it next year...lol

If you recall on my Saturday post I showed you that I had made some progress on my baby quilt. I took the strips sewed them together and made 40 3.5" pairs. I have now joined those 40 pairs to make 20 6.5" four patch blocks. They came together nice and easy and my seams matched up pretty good too....not that the baby will care that much or well at all...LOL

I also cut out my minky squares. I have never worked with minky before, but I see it being a challenge since it is so slippery and stretchy. The next step in the quilt is pretty easy I just take 7 blocks alternating between the four patch and the monky. sew them together and repeat until all the blocks are used. I am hoping to get that done today as long as the minky doesn't get the best of me

To do list for December

A Good Stink

Are you asking yourself if there is such a thing as a  good stink? Well I am here to tell you YES..lol

Yesterday my mother came over to help me can sauerkraut. Well I told her what to do and she made me sit and watch, but it worked out well.

1.5L is missing since it got eaten last night

We ended up getting 15.5 1L jars done up which was pretty darn GREAT. Last year we got 7 jars out of 12. It was my first year making sauerkraut and I didn't pack them quite as tight as I should of. In addition to that a few went moldy. This year we packed the suckers tight as heck and started off with 17 1L jars, two smelled a little iffy to my Mom. However 15.5 out of 17 is a much better result.

I tried some last night with a bit of pasta. It was quite a bit salty and I am not sure if that is because I used too much salt or because I didn't rinse it off before I processed it this year. (I forgot about that until it was all canned and processed..OOOPS) It is a pretty mild kraut otherwise which is good and bad, but still eatable either way!

Have a Great Day

Good Bye November

I know I already posted earlier in the week that I cannot believe that November is almost over and with today being the official last day of the month I really cannot believe it!!

Mr.P's office is having their Christmas party tonight which seems WAY TO EARLY, but we are still going. I am still having problems sitting so it should be an interesting evening. Mr.P had now been working with these guys for over a year now so there should be more to talk about vs last year when he had only been officially working in the shop a few weeks before the Christmas party. This year the party is at the wildlife federation in town so we shall be having supper with dozens of stuffed animals....that should be very festive..LOL

I got a bit of  sewing done this week and now it lies in pieces on my cutting table. Although it looks messy I have everything in pairs just ready to be sewn. Ill post more on that on Wednesday.

There was some sad and gross news at our acreage today. Yesterday I found meaty bones in front of the cat door out back. I assumed they had found the muskrat Zada killed and were making a meal of it. Gross, but they are all outdoor cats so not really unexpected. However, today when Mr.P went to feed the cats he noticed that Tiny was missing. He took a quick look around the chicken  cat coop and found Tiny behind a wood pile half eaten!! YUCK YUCK YUCK. So now I am not so sure the bones in front of the coop are muskrat they just might be cat. He was alive and well on Thursday. I usually count all the cats when I feed them just to make sure no one is missing and for the first time in 6 months forgot to check yesterday. I hope that something happened to him and they were just feasting on him after he died, not that the rest of the litter was hungry and just ate him. Even though they are outdoor cats and fend for themselves we still feed them cat food/water everyday so they shouldn't have been THAT hungry. This will be the 2nd kitten in 2 months that has gone missing. We never found Whitey and I am glad that I wasn't the one to find Tiny!

Okay enough about that it is just sad and oh so GROSS. I am off to get a bit more sewing done and then maybe a nap or two while the laundry is washing itself...LOL

Black Friday Bust

I got up early (for me) today to check out all the Black Friday sales online only to find my poor credit card still unused an hour later...LOL

I was mainly looking at fabric and nothing really said BUY ME this year. There were a few things that I could have bought just because they were on sale, but nothing I really needed so I put the credit card back in my wallet.

Quite a few stores in Canada have jumped on the Black Friday Bandwagon. Even here in Saskatchewan there is quite the Black Friday Buzz. Not enough of a buzz for me to get out of my jammies and drive to the city to check out the sales, but the "TV" says that many stores are expecting quite the line ups.

Since I am having trouble walking I really wanted to get a few items crossed off my list,  however none of the places I am looking at online ship to Canada. I hate when that happens. I guess that is one of the problems of marring a Swiss man with European tastes...lol The other problem is that neither Mr.P nor my mother have given me their wish lists yet so I am shopping blind.

Okay I think I have wasted enough time online today sitting at the pc when I am suppose to be laying down...shhh don't tell anyone! I might even do some sewing...but don't tell anyone that either or ill get my butt kicked and its already pretty sore..LL

Have a great week-end

Wip 27/11/13

Well here we are at Work in progress Wednesday once again. I as always had big plans for the past week, but they never seem to turn out...lol I have become one of those many lucky pregnant women that get horrible sciatic pain. I'm doing a bit better now,but for the past 5days I have been unable to sit let alone walk. So what happens on the first day I feel a little bit better...I try and get some sewing done and now I am paying for it.im smart like that..lol

My plan was to work on my Christmas table runner and baby quit, but once my bee blocks started coming in my focus changed..lol

For my month in the We Bee Learning bee I asked for 16patch blocks. My plan is to add a few similar blocks with stars in them. Here is theBlock I made with the star

And here is my block with the blocks I have received to date. Three more blocks are on
their way and I will make two more and that should be enough for a lap quilt.

Not ready for December!

Wow it is the last Monday in November....Where the heck did the rest of the month go!!! It is scary to think that December is really creeping up on us and before we know it Christmas will be over and we will be ringing in 2014!

Personally I find the weeks usually fly by anyhow, but when you are looking forward to something sometimes it feels like you are so focused on the goal that you forget to enjoy the time in between. Maybe that is just me. I am just so excited looking forward to March and meeting this little mystery baby that I keep forgetting to stop and smell the roses along the way.

Part of the problem as well is that this will be the 1st Christmas without my Dad and for as much as i really love celebrating Christmas I just want to skip over it this year. Ever since I was about 5 my Dad and I would have a special Christmas shopping day, just the two of us. We would go to the mall he would buy me the prettiest dress we could find, do some shopping for Mom, have lunch and then see a movie. Although I spent a lot of time with my Dad and we did go shopping other times it was the best day of the year for me. We continued on that tradition every year until this past December. Starting in grade 11 we also attended the annual father-daughter festival of tree's supper and kept up that tradition as well until it got to be the same thing year after year. So we decided to still get dressed up and go out for supper just the two of us, but at a restaurant of our choosing. Last year we didn't go out for supper as my Dad was pretty stressed out awaiting biopsy results that he was sure were going to be cancer. Our shopping day was also cut short as he just had too many thing on his mind. He told me he would make it up to me next year, but he didn't live long enough for that to happen. So you can understand why I would rather December go by as quickly as possible.

You know your Dad is going to pass away some day, I just always thought I would be in my 60's when that happened with children and grandchildren of my own. It never occurred to me it would happen when I was 32 and pregnant with my first child.

Okay this is not where I planed this post to go at all, but I must have needed to get that out and now it is out and I can move on. Thanks for listening and I promise my other posts this week will be much more positive!

WIP 20/11/13

I was able to get a little bit of work done yesterday. I mainly spent the time cleaning up my craft room which resulted in it getting messier than before, but at least I made a bit of a dent.

I made a wonky star block for Vickey as part of the Bee’s Helping Bee’s project.(click the button on the sidebar to learn more) I really love making this block, because it is easy and always come together nicely.

I have at least 40 Christmas/ baby things that I want to start making so my want to be wip list is pretty long. I am not going to list them all since it will be too overwhelming. However, there are two items from no progress list that fit the bill and I am going to move them up to current WIP’s

The two items I am going to put on and try to get done are

Complete Christmas table runner: Stop thinking and start doing something!!

Baby quilt-cut out, assemble, and quilt

Zada's Big Day

**** Warning this story and these pictures may be offensive to some people****

Yesterday we had beautiful weather. It actually hit +3C which was a nice break from the -20C we were having the few days prior. Since it was so nice I let Zada sit outside with the cats on the front steps. Its always nice and sunny there and better than being inside. I had to put her on her leash though since she will run off to investigate (aka finding frozen cat poop to dig up and eat)

After checking on her to make sure all was well and she wasn't too cold I went back to watch some t.v when all of a sudden I hear her chain hitting the railing on the steps. Nothing too uncommon as she does walk around, however this sound was soon accompanied by her growling, yelping and barking. I ran(fast walked) to the door to see what was going on only to find her in the space between the house and the steps fighting something. My first thought was that the cats (we have 7 now 3 adult 4 kittens) finally pissed her off and she was killing one of them. So I opened the door and went outside barefoot to start yelling at her. I quickly did a cat tally and they were all there. So I peaked over the railing to see what she was fighting and low and behold I thought it was a little beaver....lol I know I live in Canada and yes there are likely beavers within a 10km radius of our place, but we live in a hamlet so the chances would be EXTREMELY small.

I ran to the phone to call Mr.P to see what I should do. Should I pull her off of it (stupid idea for a pregnant lady), get the gun out and shoot(with my bad aim i would shoot the dog) or just wait and see what happens. Well by the time I got him on the phone she quickly snapped its neck and dragged it out to where I could get a better look. The whole fight was 2mins in total tops. Turns out it was a big nasty ole muskrat....YUCK. So it was beaver like and I wasn't totally crazy...LOL

The blood in both pictures is Zada's and not the muskrat.

No idea why a muskrat would be that close to the front of our house. Like I said there were 8 rodent hating animals sitting right there on the steps and it was stupid enough to get that close. You think it would be able to smell them and at least stay the distance the leash went away.

Zada came out of it with only a small injury. Her shots are up to date so we are not too worried. After she rolled all over the muskrat I made her roll in the snow for a good 10mins so I hope that got off anything that she could have caught from it.

I had to get a shovel and carry the muskrat out back otherwise Zada would chew on it and so would the cats, birds or whatever else wanted to come into the yard. I cursed the whole time because it was gross and I am girly. I yell at spiders and this was a lot bigger than a spider...LOL

So that was Zada's (and my) big adventure yesterday. Today I am hoping to have enough energy to get some sewing done!

Have a great day

Bee's Helping Bee's

As some of you may recall I started up a flickr group back in April called Bee's Helping Bee's. The concept behind this group is for quilters to help fellow quilters in making....... (insert drum-roll here)........ yep you guessed it quilt blocks!

So many of us quilters in the online community are part of virtual quilting bee's. Unfortunately there are times when you don't end up getting all of your blocks. When that happens there are two options ..give up on the quilt or make the blocks yourself.

However, now there is a third option.

Join our group Bee's Helping Bee's. Post a thread on the blocks you are missing and within in minutes there will be lovely people popping in to say they would love to help you.

Are you reading this and thinking I could sure use some help on finishing up some quilt blocks, but I wasn't in an online bee. Well guess what!! We will help you too!!

The only rule to the group is that if you post a thread requiring help you have to help out at least one other person.

Right now we have three lovely ladies that need some help with some pretty easy blocks. If the words Woven Ribbons, Heart Blocks and Wonky Stars get your sewing foot a itchin.

Darn it!

On friday night the local weather announcers informed us that there was a storm a brewing on the coast of B.C that would and should be heading right for us here in Saskatchewan. This storm was going to bring 10-15cm of snow and cooler temps that would likely mean the snow was going to be here to stay.
Now I don't have enough fingers or toes to count the number of times I have heard news like that for things to change and the weather doesn't quite end up as they predicted......However, this time they were right...... DARN IT.
It started with rain Sunday morning about 3am and  luckliy for us in this area it only started to turn to snow by 6pm. Nonetheless as not to be left out we got dumped on too...so
HELLO WINTER for the next 6 months....LOL
I thought this pic would look artsy because of the ice crystal in the door window.....but nope..LOL

Wip 30/10/2014

I have a little bit to show for wip Wednesday. I got my October blocks done for We Bee Learning. Whitney had us making broken herringbone blocks in aqua, orange and brown. I would have never thought about putting these colours together, but they look amazing together!
They are in the mail and will arrive at their new home shortly

I am linking up with wip at freshly pieced and theneddleandthreadnetwork
If I can figured out how to properly edit HTML on my iPad

Its Starting......

Yesterday we awoke to a little snow, but by 10am it was all pretty well gone. Today is it after 11am and the snow we got overnight/this morning is still here. Luckily it is just a wee little bit. However, it means that winter is just around the corner. I really hope we have a mild winter with not a lot of snow. We were hit hard last year and I personally feel like we deserve a little break this winter...LOL

This and That

For the past few days Mother Nature has been reminding us that winter is indeed on the way. She was tricking us for awhile give us days of lovely sunny weather over the past week-end. This tricks us into thinking that winter along with that 4 letter 2 word are further away that we think! This time last year we already had snow and guess what it didn’t go away until May! It was a hard cold winter with way too much snow. I am hoping that this winter Mother Nature goes a little easier on us.

We spent the majority of the Thanksgiving long week-end trimming trees and hauling branches away. Well my mom and Mr. Pickles did. I was in charge of keeping the chair on the ground and bringing water when needed..lol My workers got A LOT done and the yard is looking great. We had a professional tree trimmer come out and give us a quote on just tiding up 10 trees. It was going to cost 6000 with tax and well there is no way we can afford that so Mr.P did his best to trim what he could. He was able to do most of it himself though so we saved a few thousand bucks. We still have 3 trees that we cannot do on our own so the professionals are going to come out in a few weeks.
He wasn't trying to get all the branches in the kennel...but it just ended up happening that way...LOL

Instead of supervising I should have been in the house canning tomatoes, but it was just too nice outside and well I was too afraid someone would get hurt if I wasn’t watching. I did however make a batch of salsa yesterday. I got 11 jars, but only use up 52 tomatoes. I had done up some whole tomatoes last week (no pic) and got 7 1L jars and used 120 tomatoes. I figure I still have a good 100lbs+ to use up. They are getting rotten, but there are still more good than bad.

In other news...I got a new cell phone a few months ago..a Samsung to replace my old blackberry and I am having the hardest time getting my pics off of it. I can connect it to the laptop but then the pics don’t show up just a generic pic so I have to guess what I am adding to my pictures files. I added google+ since that is what the “internet” said to do to make it easier. However I don’t like the idea of all the pics I take being backed up online for anyone to see.(I know it says only I can see them but I have my doubts) also not all the pics on my phone show up when I click the phone option. So then I end up having to do everything the hard way...gesh. You would think that the newer the technology the easier it would be. On my old bb all I had to do was sync my phone to the lap top and voila all pic showed up on the laptop in order and ready to share. I am sure I am doing something wrong......maybe...gotta be the phone and not the user....right...LOL
