WIP 26/09/2012

Well here we are at the end of the month and guess what everything that needed to get done this month got done! Granted there are still a few things on the to-do list, but they are all WIP’s so if they carry on for a few months that is fine. For the first time in a long time I can scratch everything off my to-do list hanging in my craft room. Now I have to start playing a little catch up!

Today I am linking up with WIP Wednesday over at Freshly Pieced and @The Needle and Thread Network.  Make sure you hop on over there and see what everyone else is working on too.

Harvest Monday 24/09/2012

This past week we had a couple of days of frost that really put an end to the growing season. Nonetheless, the harvest keeps rolling in. I am linking up with harvest Monday over at Daphne's Dandelions

I picked as many tomatoes as I could and have been continuing to cover them when the frost warning comes out. This is what I have brought in so far.

I have only been about to weigh the three small boxes and the total has come to. 20.169kg I will weigh the rest later.

I went and picked as many spaghetti squash as I could. This is what I was able to save 25.7kg None of them are ripe, but I am hoping that they will still survive. There are about another 10+ out in the garden, but either the frost got them or they are too immature.
they might not be mature but they all weighed around
2.5kg...crazy!

I also picked the last of the broad beans and got 2.250kg

The frost helped to uncover the hiding zucchini. We found 10.789kg

We also dug up another 2 rows of potatoes and got of norland and of Yukon gold, but I haven’t weighed them yet

FNSI results 22/09/2012

Handmade by Heidi

Yesterday I got in a wee bit of sewing. I had a lot more planed however we ended up having to go to the city to pick up family from the airport....which didn’t end up happening because they missed their plane and I guess they had already asked someone to pick them up. It’s always nice when you try to do something nice and instead be made out to be idiots. But enough about that...I’m over it...lol..no really I am...lol

So what did I get done?
I finished the extra two blocks for the wonky bee. The last block I made isn’t very wonky though..lol

I also spent time working on my 2011BOM and got one flower started I now have 2 done....lol

I spend the remainder or my time drawing out what I am planning to make for the Leafs me happy fall blog hop. Keep in mind I CANNOT DRAW...so it has made for some interesting pictures. I am planning one appliqué piece and maybe a little table runner. I post my results on the 2nd of October so I better get a move on that!

I hope everyone else had a great FNSI

Thursdays Kitchen Cupboard 20/09/2012

Today's hosts on the Dots on Dots blog hop are:
September 20th
**************************************************

I was able to get a little bit of preserving done this week which makes me quite happy. I was really feeling like I wasn’t getting much put away for winter, but after the past week I am feeling a little better about that.

I am linking up with Robin over at The Gardener of Eden for Thursdays Kitchen Cupboard

After getting some new flour I had a bit of a baking day on Saturday. I made my zucchini bread which was heavy as heck, but quite yummy. I plan to make a few more loaves and freeze them for later.
forgot to take a picture when it looked nice and yummy...this little bit is all that is left...lol

I also made 2 loafs of Swiss farmers bread. It was pretty darn great too. However, I should have turned the 2 huge loaves into 4...lol Oh well live and learn right. One is already gone and the other is in the freezer.

I finally had enough ripe tomatoes to make my first batch of salsa. I was a little runnier that I would have liked and a little hotter, however I think it will still taste pretty darn great. I was able to get 8 500ml jars

I also decided to freeze just about all of the cauliflower and broccoli that I showed you on Monday. I should have enough now to get us though a few months.
last night I picked the remainder of my broad beans, blanched and froze them. I just made 1C bags this time and will use them in soups

Today's plan is to can some bruschetta and maybe get a bit of sewing done :)

My list of things that I still need to can/freeze this year are
Tomato sauce 40
Whole tomatoes 30
Salsa 16
Taco Sauce 10
Beets- might just freeze these
Carrots-freeze

Much smaller than last year, but still quite a bit!

Have a great day

Today I am linking up with WIP Wednesday over at Freshly Pieced and @The Needle and Thread Network.  Make sure you hop on over there and see what everyone else is working on too.

Week 14/15

Today's hosts on the Dots on Dots blog hop are:
September 18th

***********************************************************************

These past two weeks there were frost warnings not once but three times with temperatures feeling like -4C. The days have been cool and for almost a whole week had winds at 95km/h . By the start of week 15 there was still the risk of frost, but the days were quite warm. This usually leaves me playing the should I shouldn’t I game with the garden. Should I pick everything or let it ripen on the plant. Should I cover as much as I can or just risk it? This especially rings true with the tomatoes.

On Sunday night we had the first real frost where it didn’t just feel like -4C it was -4C. I covered the tomatoes since I was feeling too unwell to bring them in. I saved the tomatoes, but as you will soon see nothing else really survived!

Here is the main garden at week 15.

As you can see it looks burnt out. I have picked just about everything. All the remains are the carrots, beets, broad beans, a few onions, some tomatoes and of course the potatoes. Everything else got frost bite and is dead or dying

The new garden is done too. Look at everything....dead..... My spaghetti squash didn’t have a chance to ripen. They are a good size, but green. Since the vines are dead I will bring them in today and hope for the best.

The pumpkins are not doing much better either. The plant is dead and all of the pumpkins are still too immature. There would have been some nice ones though. This makes me very sad.

The patio garden has moved into the garage and I will be harvesting the herbs in the next day of two.

So there you go the garden is pretty well done for the year.

Spam

I have been  getting about 20+ spam messages a day and since I have my e-mail going to my phone it has been rather annoying.
I have noticed that I only get spam on my Thursday's Kitchen cupboard posts. So I am not sure if it is the content that is hitting the spam go button or what!

I do not want to turn word verification back on...since I HATE IT...lol However I have changed my message setting to registered users only.

If anyone has a problem leaving messages let me know and I can change it back

Not really Sewing Saturday

Well there hasn’t been too much sewing going on to report for today, but I will tell you what has gone on in the past few days.
On Wednesday night I decided that my craft room really really really needed a good cleaning. It was getting to the point where I had to walk over things and well I heard rumours that the next episode of hoarders was going to be at my place so I got my butt in gear. The bad thing about letting things get out of control is that it takes so much extra effort to clean it. You would think I would have learnt this by now.

My mother always kept a spotless house I however did not get those genes and instead got the ones from my father where we keep everything, don’t put away our things and leave every cupboard door open and light on....lol I would have loved to have shown you a before picture, however it was just too embarrassing...lol So long story short I spent a good part of Wednesday cleaning up, which if you clean like me means that things get worse before they get better. I still have another good couple of hours of cleaning before it is done.

This is where things are at now.....which doesn't really let me do any sewing..lol The sewing machine on the other side of the room is clean, but my cutting table is piled HIGH with...crap....LOL

Thursday night was Mr. Pickles and my 4th wedding anniversary. We decided no presents this year and instead we would spend the extra money on eating out.

Since Mr.P is Swiss we fondue quite a bit and that was our first choice of what to do for our anniversary. We were just going to stay at home and do that, however, there just happens to be a fondue restaurant in Saskatoon that we had never been to. So we figured we would give it a try and it was pretty good. Now when we put on a meat or cheese or chocolate fondue at our place we go all out and have enough meat or bread or fruit to feed us plus 4 more. You can’t really expect that from a restaurant, but it was still good enough and we left full. Now would we go back again....probably not since we do a better job, but it was something different. We are still questioning if the restaurant is the reason we were both sick that night/Friday too!!

Okay if you survived reading all of that .....back to sewing.....kind of....lol

I did end up getting a bit done. I picked the last thing on my no progress list and started on it. It is a fall wall hanging. I have everything cut out and ready to iron on. I am not very good at machine sewing the appliqué, but I shall see how it goes.....
can you guess what this will become??

Have a great day

Friday`s Kitchen Cupboard

First of all I would like to thank everyone who stopped by yesterday for the dots on dots blog hop. Your kind comments just made my day. Today`s hosts are:
September 14th
****************************************************

Since I was taking part in the Dots on Dots blog hop yesterday I was unable to post my Thursdays kitchen cupboard post...so I am doing it today `J I am still linking up with Thursdays kitchen cupboard over at The gardener of Eden.

This past week there was not a lot going on in the kitchen, but enough that I am going to post about it..lol

The cucumbers are slowing down and I decided to make one last batch of Spilt Dill pickles. They are just so easy to make and really taste great so I used up a good portion of cukes to get 8 jars.

I also dried my Hungarian wax peppers. It took a lot longer than I thought it would. I ended up with just a wee bit to show for it; however, it tastes pretty good. It is such a mild pepper that there isn`t much heat, but just enough to give soups or sauces a little zing.

I also shredded up my 3kg zucchini and was going to turn it into Zucchini bread. However, when I went to get my flour I noticed a little bug in the first cup i took out. I thought oh well a wee little bug picked it out and poured it in the mixer. When I dug out the next cup I noticed something moving.....a little maggot! I went back and looked at the flour I had poured in the mixer and it was ALL MOVING full of bug.....YUCK!!! So I of course tossed everything in the mixer along with the whole 10kg bag of flour. Unfortunately I had already shredded the zucchini so I had to freeze it until I bought some more flour. I plan on trying again today....once it is thawed out that is...LOL
Have a great day

My Stop on the Dots on Dots Hop

Dots on Dots Schedule HERE

Welcome to day 4 of the Dots on Dots Blog Hop
Today is an extra special day since it is also my 4th wedding Anniversary.

I would like to say thank you to Madame Samm for creating this hop and to Corrie for being our dotty cheerleader.

I know I say this every hop, but I really do enjoy taking part. I love the push to make something, the inspiration that flows from blog to blog each day and of course the cheering on. No matter what kind of day I am having getting an inbox full of such kind comments does wonders to one`s soul!

I will admit to hitting a bit of a road block when it came to this hop. I had lots of dot fabric, but I couldn’t think of a thing to make. This resulted in a lot of time just sitting in my craft room and thinking....I am sure some of you could see the smoke coming from Saskatchewan...ya that was me...lol

Finally I decided to make a block for my SewHappyGeek QAL quilt. Now the QAL ended almost 6 months ago and I am still dawdling behind. Most of the fabric I am using for the quilt has....well you guessed it DOTS so it only seemed right to make a few blocks and kill 2 birds with one stone!

This one is called peek a boo. All the fabric has dots except for the black. Sometimes tone on tone dots don’t work...LOL

The 2nd block I made I am going to use in the same quilt but it was not part of the QAL. I decided to skip the paper piecing block and just make something else I had never tried before. What I ended up with was a framed rail fence. I really like this block.

I like to try and make at least one block that I can say is just for me during each blog hop. Therefore, the final block I made was from my head . I wanted to make something to remind me that even though life can get dark at times the sun is always shining. I am going to turn this into a wall hanging for my craft room.

Thank you for stopping by and taking the time to look at my dotty creations. I hope you all have a lovely time on your stop. J Now go and check out the blogs listed below I am sure there are some more great dots creations to be found! To check out the full schedule just click the link above and that should take you to Corries site.
