Before I get into my secrets here is a short recap of the week

And today is my day

When I was putting together this hop I wasn’t sure if I should even take part in it. I haven’t been sewing for very long and I wasn’t sure if I had any secrets to share.  I finally decided on talking about the top 5 secrets that have changed my quilting experience

1. A  ¼"foot doesn't automatically mean ¼" seams!

When I took my first and only quilting class the supply list said you needed a ¼" foot since you were going to be required to have ¼” seams. I used it in the class it worked, but my seams were rarely ¼” the quilt still came together and I thought okay whatever the size of the seams don’t really matter. Fast forward to my 2nd quilting project a Block of the month club I took part in at my lqs. Now I didn’t pay too much attention to my seams and guess what after 3 months I threw the BOM in a pile and never did the rest. What happened you ask? Well having a variety of seam widths meant that nothing fit together properly I figured I was too stupid to sew and walked away.

When I started sewing again in 2011 I really took my ¼ seam to heart. This is an easy way I practiced to get nice ¼ seams. They still are not always perfect but MUCH better than before.

First check out your machine. Most will have markings telling you how many inches your seam will be if you sew to that line

Second if you don't have a 1/4" seam line measure 1/4"from your needle and mark the spot with tape, post its or anything that will allow for a raised area that you can line your fabric up to

Third cut 2 1.5inch wide pieces of fabric, put them rightsides together and line up to your 1/4" seam marking

If you want a scant 1/4" seam line fabric up just to the left of the marking

Step 4 is checking that your seam is 1/4" press fabric and use ruler to measure seam if it is 1/4" or slightly less you are good to go.

Step 5 for an even better check on your seam press your fabric open and measure the width. I should measure 2.5inches across. If it doesn't repeat the steps above

2. Pressing
First of all I HATE ironing. Up until last year I think my iron got used maybe 3 times since I got it as a wedding present in 2008. After I spent time getting my seams to ¼ I found that I was still getting inconsistent blocks and that was due to my ironing skills. I would stretch the fabric till my stitches showed and well that isn't good.
These are some quick tips for ironing. I use steam, but that is just my preferance

Step one once you have finished sewing a piece take it off the machine and just place your hot iron down on it for at least 5 seconds. Don't move the iron just place it down, hold and bring it back up. This set the seam.

Step 2. Always press from the front of the fabric to avoid wrinkles and always press toward the dark to avoid fabric shadows. I use the nose to press open the seam while pushing the iron towards the dark

Step 3. I then turn my iron towards the top of the seam and press straight down again for 5 seconds with out moving the iron.

Turn your fabric over and admire your seam.

Another option for pressing your seams is to press them open. I hate doing this put it really does help when trying to line up seams. I do steps 1-4 above and then finger press the seam open. I then use the nose of the iron to press the seam open again

3. Understanding your rulers.
Melissa had a great post on how to line up your rulers for cutting on Wednesday. Personally living in Canada and growing up with the metric system I never really learnt inches. So when it came to quilting and only finding rulers in the imperial system I had to learn. I keep a piece of paper with
1/8, 1/4, 3/8, 1/2, 5/8, 3/4, 7/8, and 1
on it just above my cutting table so I always have a quick reference

4.Chain piecing.
Now this is one of my favourite things to do. It’s so easy and speeds things up. It also helps to keep your fabric moving and helps to eliminate those thread nests that can happen when you sew.(or at least when I sew)

To chain piece just start your first piece though the machine as normal. Instead of cliping the threads and removing it from the machine keep it on. Sew a few more stitches and feed your 2nd piece into the machine. Continue with the rest of your pieces until you are done and everything is sewn into a little chain

After you have sewn all your pieces together you simply cut the chains and carry on. I find this works GREAT when making Hst's. I chain piece just about everything I do

5. The secret that really changed my quilting life
Perfection does not mean its perfect

After I took that quilting class in 2009 and failed at the BOM I started in 2010 I had given up on ever being a quilter. Part of my brain thinks it’s is a perfectionist however the other half of my brain and body never give it perfect results which leads to frustration, anger and giving up. I had worked myself into such a state that I couldn’t even physically go into my sewing room.  I had all but given up hope until I found Sue’s blog and through it the wantobe quilters campaign at sewiquiltnow.com.

From there I began to think I could sew again and even joined a blog hop. There were A LOT of tears and yelling and more tears but I finished the project. Were there mistake...oh yes, however when I sewed that last stitch I looked at my work and cried because it was PERFECT. I literally marched up and down the hallway in our house holding my wall hanging above my head shouting I DID THIS AND ITS PERFECT.

All if a sudden something clicked and I had an a ha moment...Perfection doesn’t mean its perfect... yes there were mistakes but in my eyes it was perfect. Now I don’t mean I couldn’t see the mistake they were there but you know what everyone makes mistakes no one is perfect. I guarantee you that every quilt you see online has at least a couple of errors in it. Once I was able to accept that quilting became a lot easier for me. I joined a few online quilting bees and took part in a handful of blog hops. Now I know from a perfectionist standpoint most of what I do likely isn’t “good “enough. I still have tears at times and am full of self doubt a lot, but I try my best and repeat my manta often. When it comes down to it all it really is all about your own happiness when it comes to quilting. If you are not happy doing it than guess what you are not going to keep at it.

Okay so there you go this is the end of my rather long winded post!!! I hope you were able to take something away from that.

    Thanks so much!

  11. Mrs. Pickles, Thanks for sharing the accurate 1/4" seam tutorial, it is so essential and for hosting this blog hop. I think my favorite tips were from Linda about using the different glues in sew many different ways. I never knew most of that! And I've been sewing 50 years and quilting for about 30 of them!
    Nice to learn new things.
    Happy New Year! Jane

  13. Thank you for sharing your tips on ironing quilt piecing. I'm ironing my seams to death! Also your tips on sewing a good 1/4" seam.
Many good tips in this series. However, I believe that I use Sharon's web style of sewing squares together neatly the most helpful.

  17. Mrs. P, thank you for your contributions to the week of secrets and for arranging everything for this blog hop.

I came away with some new information from each and every contributor. I have to say my favorite was Linda's gluing ideas.

  18. I really liked Linda's tips on using glue. I haven't used glue as I usually just make a mess but I will try it now. Thanks for a fun little hop.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I have learned a lot with this blog hop, it's difficult to pick just one tip. I never press my seams to set them before I press them open, will have to try that. Also, the sandpaper to hold the fabric is a great one. Thanks for all the wonderful hints! sguday at shaw dot ca

  20. I picked up several great tips from this blog but couldn't pick just one as the best! Loved the ones on the glue (who knew?), the quarter inch help, interfacing... I thought all of them were great! Thanks for the wonderful help!

  21. This has been a great hop. I loved all the secrets, and I think I knew most of them, but the best of all? Perfection doesn't mean it's perfect. That is THE most important secret. The quilter should love his or her quilt. Anything else is gravy. Thanks so much for doing this and I did advertise the hop.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I thought this was a very good hop with good info that I can actually use in my quilting. Sharon's tip about the single hole plate for sewing seams on small pieces of fabric was new to me and something I know I will try, but I picked up tips from all of the participants. Thanks.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Thanks so much for letting us share in all those useful secrets. I especially liked the 3D curved Flying Geese.

    ReplyDelete
  24. The blog hop tips have been wonderful. I have filled a couple of notebook pages with new methods to give a try. I especially loved Christine's HST tips of using sandpaper to stabilize the fabric while drawing sewing lines. I used the tip yesterday and it worked beautifully.

  25. I like Sew Sisters Quilt Shop on Facebook.

Thanks for organizing the hop. I've had a great time following along and appreciate the tips. Happy quilting!

  26. Honestly, I think the 1/4" seam tips is the one I like the best. Sometimes new quilters just don't realize what an important step this is and tend to give up in the beginning, like you did, without realizing what went wrong. It's such a simple tip, but one that might be the most crucial for a beginner - and many advanced - quilters

I like Sew Sisters Quilt Shop on Facebook.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Like Tina just above me I have to say getting a 1/4" seam is the most difficult thing for me to do so all tips about that are a plus for me. I have a new machine and the markings on it are much more accurate than my last machine - and that's one thing I would recommend to anyone....check the markings on your machine. They might not be accurate! blessings, marlene

  28. I liked Barbara's applique tips and Sharon's "web" tricks, although I learned something from every blog, thanks.

  30. Sandpaper!Just don't tell my husband where all of his sandpaper has gone!!
    sowingstitches[at]gmail[dot]com

    ReplyDelete
  31. I really liked them all but the one for the appliqueing was a big help. I was wondering about when you said about opening your seams and pressing them down. I was always told that the seams was stronger when not left opened. So I can iron them open which would make it easier to join them togeather. Thanks for all the turtorials this week. I enjoyed them.

    ReplyDelete
  32. The flying geese tutorial was my favorite. I am going to have to try it.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I enjoyed all of the tutorials. The sandpaper and the pinning in the HST tutorial were very helpful! Thank you! ~Jeanne

  36. This hop has been brilliant - thank you to Mrs P and the other girls! I've learnt plenty - particularly about applique.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I think I took something away from each day but any time glue can be used to increase accuracy, that's a good thing. This was a good refresher to begin the new year. Thanks for organizing it.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I loved them all! Some helped me remember things I had forgotten and other taught me something different. I really loved the glue techniques and the "Perfection isn't always perfect!"

    ReplyDelete
  39. So much of what you wrote is still very important even for seasoned quilters as well as the newbies. And I too learned to relax more once I realized that even the "professionals" aren't 100% perfect. Besides "perfect" isn't as great to me...having someone make something with their own hands is more important.

My favorite part of this hop was Barbara's great applique info. I recently tried it and didn't do too well. With all her terrific tips, I know the next time I will succeed.

Thank you so much for a really wonderful hop.

    ReplyDelete
  40. They were all really great....each in it's way will help in not ending up with another UFO in the closet because something just would not come together as it should. I liked the tips about applique since that is what I'm doing at the moment. I'm sure there are many other tips that would benefit all of us! Thanks for putting this hop together!

    ReplyDelete
  41. I enjoyed all the tips! One that I found especially interesting was Sharon's web technique for sewing small pieces together. Thanks for sharing!

    ReplyDelete
  42. Great tips, Hayley! The 1/4" seam still gets the best of me sometimes. It does seem that each machine manufacturer uses a different 1/4" standard! Thank you for all your hard work. This has been a great hop and something many of us needed!

    ReplyDelete
  43. This has been such a fun adventure with so many tips on sewing. Your 1/4" story was great..my 1/4" seams are okay--yay! I wouldn't have even thought to check them. Thanks! I gave up on perfection in sewing when I realized even "star" sewers make mistakes. Thank you for hosting and sharing so much info. :O)

Everything secret was great to know.

Thanks to everyone who participated, to all the sponsors, and to you Mrs P for putting it all together.

    ReplyDelete
  62. I went to Facebook and liked Two Sisters.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Thanks for bringing us back to the basics, especially acknowledging that we are not 'perfect'. My favorite tip was the glue post by Linda. I do FB, but don't 'like' any businesses because I discovered whatever I 'like' can appear on my friends' pages as ads, because of FB's new settings. Because that annoys me, I try to avoid annoying my friends.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Everyone had great tips. The first I will try are Sue's flying geese methods.

    ReplyDelete
  65. I guess the most surprising thing I learned was from Linda about using GLUE!

  81. I've followed all the blogs each day, and it's really difficult to tell you which tip is the best. 88. All the tips were great. I think I learned the most from Barbara's post on fusible appliqué. I also appreciated your thoughts on perfection. Quilting is supposed to be fun and while we strive for perfection, there shouldn't be undue stress if it isn't achieved. Sometimes we are too close to our work and when we step back, find it hard to spot what we thought was an obvious flaw. It doesn't mean we should be careless, just that we should not be so hard on ourselves.

    ReplyDelete
  89. I liked all the tips, but the pressing one was a good one for me. Also how to use a ruler and line up with the black on the fabric edge. I've already tried that and it came out great.

I have done a lot of applique but you can always learn and through the tips I hope to fine tune my skills even more. Yea for the Wantabe quilters campaign!!!that got you going again. 119. All of the ladies gave out great tips and i learned something from each one. But I really like your tip about perfection doesn't mean it has to be perfect. I tend to try to make everything perfect and then get upset because it isn't. If I like it, then it should be good enough and that is all that matters. Thank you for the great giveaway!

  121. Thanks for all the great tips. I think my next project will be fusible applique - thanks for the great pointers. Especially when using a big piece to cut out the middle. I've not done that and I don't like the wrinkly look it gets when washed. by only having the fusible on the edges I'm hoping that is a thing of the past!

  142. Great hop and it was so nice to review what I already knew, to remember what I had forgotten and to learn some new tips and ways to do things. I've never found a way to make flying geese that I'm happy with so it was great to learn a new way from Sue. Going to give it a try and share with my sewing group.

Thank you and Sew Sister's Quilt Shop for an awesome giveaway and a chance to win.
