Sewing Saturday

I finally finished my union Jack paper Pieced block for the Bee Creative 2012 Bee. There was a lot of stress, worry, ripping, tears, swearing, more ripping, wasting A LOT of fabric and then giving up.

Every time I would start to think.”WOW paper piecing is easy!!” I would realize that I cut on the wrong side. Or that the fabric didn’t quite cover what it was suppose to. I ended up using computer paper since that is all that I had on hand. It just about killed me having to rip it off since I was afraid the stitches were all going to rip. I ended up wetting the paper and that helped, but I don’t think that is something that I ever want to do again!

So here is my little bugger.

There are a few little mistakes and I am not sure what to do now. I can send it along with some extra fabric and say “I’m sorry I tried my best” Or I can make another one. I think the mistakes would be hidden in the ¼” seam, but I am not sure. I won’t have enough of the fabric that I used so I would have to pick another colour combo to go with and I do have another week before it has to get into the mail. Decisions decisions decisions........

I sit here asking myself what would I think if I got this in the mail? I would see the error and go hmmmm not perfect, but not bad. I can still use this and then I would say hey for someone that just started quilting and has never done paper piecing this is really good. However, that is me I am pretty easy going and I would be happy with it...but that is just me. I know that I should likely redo it, but I think I am done with paper piecing...forever...LOL

Off to make bread now

  2. dont say you are done your block looks great! always remember that we are our own worst critics!! The mor you try the better you get and you have done a great job getting through this!! i have been told that paper piecing is not for beginners, but I never listen!! LOL Laura will LOVE it!! PS we all know that the majority of us in this bee are beginners! and I promise mine will be a breeze!!!

  3. I've had a good scrutinise of the block, Mrs P, and I'd be quite happy with it if I were to receive it - so you're being a bit harsh on yourself, I think!

Unfinished blocks always look a bit 'raw' anyway - in order to get a better idea of what it will look like made up, cover over the edges with some finished fabric (a sheet or something) by quarter of an inch all round in order to emulate it being 'in situ' - I bet it looks brill.

Lots of new skills drive me mad when I've first tried them too - I declared free motion quilting an impossibility after my initial attempts, and (after some practise) I love it now!

    Chin up!

  4. I agree with the other comments. I think it looks great. If I were to get that in the post I'd be thrilled cos I'd appreciate all the work that went into it.

I also agree that we are our own harshest critic. Think how often someone shows you something and immediately points out the "errors" she made. Had you noticed them until then? I bet you hadn't!

As a quilting teacher once told me, "Be proud of what you've achieved, not ashamed of what you think is wrong".
